  • Passport Check the expiry date and keep a photo in your phone.
  • Travel insurance Save the policy number and emergency phone line offline.
  • Hotel and flight confirmations Print one copy for immigration and late-night check-in.

Buchungen

  • Japan Rail Pass or regional tickets Bring the exchange order if you bought one before leaving.
  • Airport transfer plan First train, bus, or taxi address in Japanese.
  • Restaurant and museum reservations Screenshots beat hunting through email on roaming data.

Geld

  • Yen cash Enough for the first day; cards are still not universal.
  • No-foreign-fee card Tell the bank you are travelling if they still require it.

Kleidung

  • Comfortable walking shoes Broken in already. This is not the trip for new shoes.
  • Packable rain shell Light enough to live in the day bag.
  • Layers for train air conditioning and evenings One warm layer even in shoulder season.
  • Slip-on shoes Useful for temples, ryokan, and small restaurants.

Gesundheit

  • Medication and prescriptions Original packaging, plus a small kit for headaches and stomach trouble.
  • Toiletries under the airline limit Refillable bottles, toothbrush, deodorant, sunscreen.

Technik

  • Power adapter Type A, 100V. Most two-prong US plugs work; grounded ones may not.
  • Portable battery For long train days and navigation-heavy city days.
  • Pocket wifi or eSIM Activate before leaving the airport.
  • Offline maps and translation packs Download at home, not from airport wifi.

Tagesrucksack

  • Day bag Passport copy, battery, rain shell, cash, hand towel.
  • Reusable shopping bag Convenience stores charge for bags and you will use this daily.

Zuhause vor Abreise

  • Empty the fridge and take out trash The unglamorous line that saves future-you.
  • Set roaming, bank, and pet or plant care Do it before airport mode and departure brain kick in.
